Instruments through the microscope

Workshop led by Professor Gerard L’E. Turner

Generally speaking, it is possible to attribute an unsigned and undated instrument to a maker, a period, or to a region, before the beginning of quantity production in the eighteenth century. In order top do this, an appropriate method is to examine the characteristics of the hand-engraved markings, whether letters, numbers, mathematical or decorative lines. It will be demonstrated how this can be done by using a binocular microscope, and photographing selected areas. The images can be digitally captured, and the character images may be presented in a way that helps comparison.
