Joint Meeting of the BSHS/SIC

BSHS/SIC Meeting Image Do collections matter to instrument studies?

Joint meeting between the British Society for the History of Science
and the Scientific Instrument Commission of the IUHPS/DHS.
Oxford, United Kingdom, Saturday 29 - Sunday 30 June 2002

Programme Details

The meeting will address the gap between the increasing numbers of historians writing about instruments and the curators who actually care for our collections of instruments. The curators seem to be less aware of developments in instrument-focused work than one might expect and their lives have not been substantially affected by this major development in the history of science. On the other hand, the historians engage less than one might think with real objects and often fail to take account of what can be learnt from populations of instruments in collections. Contributions from both sides might discover common ground and forge new understandings.

Two lunches are included in the registration fee; bed and breakfast may be booked in Wadham College for the night of 29th. There will be a reception in the Museum of the History of Science on Saturday evening.

Registration (including lunches on Saturday and Sunday): £30
Bed and breakfast in Wadham College on Saturday night: £40
